Saving: SSSO 3
Configure Skyrim Save System Overhaul 3 for a specific character and monitor saves with Save Monitoring Utility.
SSSO 3 manages how the game creates saves. Its configuration is tied to the name and save of a specific character, so the list author cannot set it up for you in advance. Configure it after creating a new character and making that character's first manual save.
SSSO3, Save Monitoring Utility, and a compatible MO2 are already included in Krosis. Do not install, reinstall, or replace them: setup starts with the character and their save, not with installing mods.
Why saves need setup
Every character needs their own ID. Do not reuse another character's configuration or ID; it is not a substitute for setting up a new playthrough.
Use SSSO3 as the only save-management system. Do not mix SSSO3 with other save managers or their settings.
Primary path: Save Monitoring Utility preset mode
Save Monitoring Utility is an MO2 plugin that watches your saves and creates or updates the SSSO3 playerid files for you. Preset mode prepares the configuration in advance and lets you enable SSSO3 without restarting the game. You can open the Nexus pages for Skyrim Save System Overhaul 3 and Save Monitoring Utility, but do not install them separately from Krosis.
- In the MO2 plugin settings, set
preset_enabledto True. - In the
preset_namefield, enter the exact name of the character you plan to use. The name is case-sensitive. - Start a new game, create a character with that name, and make the first save (Save1).
- The utility writes the ID into the configuration, after which you enable SSSO3 in MCM and apply the recommended settings below.
If the save name does not match preset_name, nothing is written and an error is logged in SSSO3SaveMonitor.log in the MO2 install folder. The utility helps create the configuration; it does not promise to repair every save error. If it reports a problem, stop and consult the log, its documentation, or support channel.
Recommended SSSO3 settings
- Timed Save: enabled, autosave every 5 minutes, force autosave every 15 minutes.
- Rotation: 5 copies for autosaves, 5 copies for manual saves.
- Save Shield: check Combat State, Riding, and High Speed.
- Controls: in the Skyrim controls menu, remap the vanilla quicksave to an unused key, and in the SSSO3 MCM set Save Shortcut to F5.
Always save with F5: the pause menu save option does not engage SSSO3's protection logic. Do not use quickload — neither the vanilla nor the SSSO3 one. If you must reload, exit to desktop and restart the game.
Fallback path: automatic mode
Use this path if you did not configure the preset in advance.
- Start a new game and make a manual save after character creation.
- Restart the game once and load that manual save.
- Enable SSSO3 in MCM and apply the recommended settings above.
Fallback path: configure SSSO3 manually
Use this path only when both Save Monitoring Utility modes are unavailable or did not work.
- Create a new character and make a manual save after character creation.
- Exit the game.
- In Krosis MO2, open Folders menu → Open Profile folder →
saves. If saves are not profile-specific, openDocuments/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/Saves. - Identify the number string — the ID belonging to the manual save you just created.
- In the
SSSOConffolder, copyplayerid.txt, rename the copy to the exact character name, and replacenosetinside it with that ID. - Start the game, load that save, enable SSSO3 in MCM, and apply the recommended settings above.
Do not use the name Prisoner: the system treats any character with that name as a throwaway and does not set up safe saving for them. Automatic preset matching uses the exact name and is case-sensitive. If the name contains filesystem characters that are not supported, use SSSO3 Bypass Check as documented by the mod instead of changing the name or reusing another character's ID.
Safe saving rules
- Keep backups of important saves.
- Do not mix SSSO3 with other save managers.
- Do not reuse another character's ID or copy that character's configuration as a finished setup.
- Do not change save-management systems in the middle of a playthrough without understanding the effect on your files.
If setup does not work
Do not continue blindly: first confirm that the character name, first manual save, and ID all belong to the same playthrough. Then check the SSSO3SaveMonitor.log in the MO2 install folder and the SSSO3 or Save Monitoring Utility documentation, and contact the relevant mod support with only the information needed to diagnose the error.
